Long distance relationships - can they work?

Do you think that long distance relationships can work out?? Keeping a relationship alive across the miles is no easy task. You can get to know someone over the phone and Internet, but there are too many gaps that can only be filled by face to face interaction; and over an extended period. We are very attracted to each other and feel we are compatible, but how do you relocate across the country for a "maybe”. Long distance relationships are becoming more common as people travel far away for work, study, or reasons beyond their control.

Men and women have an equally hard time dealing with the separation that’s involved in a long-distance relationship.

COMMUNICATION is the key. Successful long distance relationships require daily interaction and sharing (the 'relating' to each other bit). Phones, email, texting, postal mail, and web cams... you must use them all. . Let them know about what you've been doing and thinking because in that way they will feel like they are there with you. But remember : missing a day does not indicate relationships’ jeopardy. Discuss your communication needs and limits. It's likely that one partner will need more communication more than the other. Get ready to be flexible.

Be honest. The best way to true intimacy and connection especially in a long distance relationship is through "total honesty" to each other in the fullest sense of the words. It goes without say that telling your whole truth can be difficult and even scary, but it will result in the kind of relationship that you really want-- a relationship where all the cards are laid in the table. Learn to trust your partner unconditionally. Trust is a very fundamental aspect in any relationship. That is because having trust in a relationship takes away doubt. All romantic relationships can experience jealousy and fears about cheating, but generally long distance relationships take longer to resolve those feelings. Maintain your own high self-esteem and high self-worth. Keep doing the things that you enjoy doing. You are a valuable, attractive, interesting person.
